An Eastport teen was seriously injured in a single-car crash on County Road 51 in Northampton this morning when he lost control of his car due to icy road conditions and struck a utility pole, Southampton Town Police said in a press release this afternoon.

John Michael Einfeldt, 18, was operating a 2004 Buick LeSabre northbound on CR 51 when he lost control and left the roadway near Country Club Drive, police said.

Police detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident, which occurred at about 6:55 a.m., to contact detectives at 631-702-2230.

Riverhead Fire Department Heavy Rescue responded to extricate Einfeld from his vehicle.

Einfeldt was treated at the scene by Flanders Ambulance and airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital by a Suffolk County Police helicopter. He is being treated for life-threatening injuries, police said.

At about the same time as the crash in Northampton, another accident involving a Suffolk County Transit bus driven by a Riverhead man claimed the life of a 27-year-old man in Water Mill.

Police said Cesar Marin of East Hampton was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV westbound on Montauk Highway when he lost control of his car due to icy roadway conditions and veered into the eastbound lane, striking a Suffolk County Transit bus head-on.

Marin was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office, police said.

The bus driver, Andrzej Jaglowski, 50, of Riverhead, was transported to Southampton Hospital by Bridgehampton Ambulance, where he was treated and released.

The New York State Department of Transportation Motor Safety Unit responded for a safety check of the bus. The Chevrolet Trailblazer was impounded to police headquarters for a safety check and further investigation, police said.

No criminal charges are expected to be filed.

Ten minutes before this accident another one-car accident occurred at the same location where a driver lost control of his vehicle on the icy roadway. No injuries occurred in that crash, police said.

“Please take extra caution when traversing the roadways in the cold weather as they may be icy and slippery. Leave extra travel time and remember to buckle up no matter how short your ride may be,” Southampton Town Police said in the release.

There were more than a half-dozen accidents on area roadways this morning between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. See separate story.
