A new building supply company has opened for business in the former Riverhead Building Supply distribution center site on Mill Road, just north of West Main Street in Riverhead.
Marjam Supply Co. has opened a kitchen and flooring showroom at the 58 Mill Road location.
The Farmingdale-based company consolidated its kitchen showroom in Greenport and its flooring showroom in Mattituck into one location in Riverhead, closer to Home Depot, Lowe’s and “the other tile and countertop people,” a company spokesperson said today.
“We believe just like with car dealerships, people pick a day or two and go shopping in one area,” said Carmen Arguelles.
“We are hoping [the Riverhead location] will help us better service the south shore and up-island a bit further,” she said. “We are still in Mattituck for the North Fork customers.”
Marjam is a privately owned company founded in Brooklyn in 1979 by brothers Mark and James Buller. It has followed an agressive growth strategy, expanding to operate 35 “super centers” in 12 states that serve the entire East Coast, according to its website.
In 2006, Marjam put down roots on the North Fork with its acquisition of Penny Lumber, a company that was established in Greenport in 1890 and expanded to Mattituck in 1961.
Riverhead Building Supply bought the five-acre Mill Road site in 1993 and moved out in November 2014, consolidating its distribution center with its expanding facilities at the Calverton Enterprise Park.
The company sold the Mill Road site to Green State Realty LLC for $2,950,000 in December 2014. Real estate broker Jack O’Connor of the commercial brokerage Newmark Grubb Knight Frank said at the time that the site had been sold to “an environmental company.” Arguelles said today Marjam is a tenant there.
