A 20-year-old Riverhead Marine was killed in a motorcycle accident in Hawaii Tuesday.
Malik Baxter died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, the Honolulu medical examiner’s office confirmed this afternoon.
He was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay in Honolulu, according to Hawaii News Now, which reported that Baxter lost control of his motorcycle and hit a fence and a light pole before being thrown from the bike Tuesday night.
Baxter was a 2013 Riverhead High School graduate, where he was a member of the NJROTC.
“He was a quiet cadet, a good kid,” said Riverhead NJROTC instructor Lt. Col. Peter McCarthy.
“I was really kind of surprised when he decided to join the Marine Corps,” McCarthy said in a phone interview this afternoon. “But I was happy. He was motivated. When he came back to visit after boot camp, he had everything on track and was excited about the life ahead of him.”
Baxter was the son of Willie and Lorraine Baxter of Riverhead and one of six siblings.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
