Riverhead Latinists came away with top honors in this week’s regional Certamen, taking first place at the most advanced level and placing in every other level of the competition.

Fourteen Long Island schools participated in the annual academic competition, which features knowledge-based quick recall questions on Latin grammar and translation, ancient Greco-Roman mythology, English word origins and other ancient historical and cultural trivia.

Riverhead’s teams advanced to the finals and placed in all four levels of the competition, from its middle school team up to its high school juniors and seniors at the advanced level.

Riverhead entered two teams into the advanced level of the competition, snagging two of the three top places in the contest. The Blue Waves Advanced A squad took first place, and the Advanced B took third.

Teams at every other level also advanced to the final rounds of the competition and came away with top honors. The high school’s regents-level team took first place at Level 3, and the ninth grade team took third place at Level 2.

Riverhead Middle Schoolers placed second at the competition’s first level.

With 14 schools from both Suffolk and Nassau counties competing at the Certamen Tuesday, the performances by Riverhead Latinists dominated the event with showings at every level.
