A storm system that forecasters say will bring wind gusts of 55 to 60 mph to Suffolk County this weekend has prompted a high wind watch from the National Weather Service and special preparations by PSEG-Long Island.
PSEG Long Island is closely monitoring the forecast for damaging, severe winds, the utility said in a press release this afternoon.
On Saturday, there is the potential for rain and/or snow with heavy winds beginning after midnight. Any precipitation will end Sunday morning but the extreme winds will persist throughout the day, PSEG said.
“If weather forecasts are correct, we could experience significant damage to the trees and power lines across our service territory due to the strong, gusting wind,” PSEG-LI vice president John O’Connell said. In the event of any outages, crews will be standing by to begin restoring service as safely and quickly as conditions allow, he said.
The weather service is not forecasting any accumulating snow. The high wind watch is in effect from late Saturday night until noon on Sunday.
