A water main leak on Peconic Bay Boulevard in Jamesport may require an interruption in water service to homes from St. Mary’s Drive in Jamesport east to the town line in Laurel Friday.
The water district’s emergency services contractor will begin repair efforts tomorrow morning, according to Riverhead Water District clerk Robin Halpin.
There is a possibility that all customers along the boulevard from St. Mary’s Drive to Laurel Lane will be shut off for about four hours tomorrow morning, beginning at about 9 a.m., she said.
It’s also possible that only a small area will be affected.
“We won’t know until we open it up,” Halpin said.
The water district hand-delivered notices to all homes in the affected area this week, she said. The district also notified the Riverhead Fire Marshal who will notify the fire department.
The leak was discovered through a leak detection program implemented by the water district this year. The district hired a leak detection company to scan the town’s water mains for leaks. The contractor scanned about 70 miles of mains and is going to provide the district with a report.
But the contractor notified Superintendent Mark Conklin of the Peconic Bay Boulevard leak before the report was completed because it seemed significant and required immediate attention, Halpin said. It’s best to address a leak like this before a break occurs, she said.
The leak detection program is part of the district’s new water conservation program.
