Two employees at the Sports Authority store in Riverhead have been arrested on grand larceny charges, according to Riverhead Town Police.
Kerry J. Nash, 19, and Matthew F. Fineron, 20, both of Riverhead, are facing charges of grand larceny in the third degree.
The store reported the thefts to Riverhead police yesterday at 5:13 p.m. and an investigation by detectives determined the employees had been stealing merchandise from the store between April 28 and May 8, according to a police press release.
Under New York State Penal Law, a person is guilty of grand larceny in the third degree when when he or she steals property having a value that exceeds $3,000. It is a class D felony.
Nash and Fineron were arrested, processed at police headquarters and held for morning arraignment.
The Riverhead Sports Authority store is one of 140 locations being shut down pursuant to a bankruptcy proceeding filed by the corporation on March 2. Since last month, it has been conducting a storewide closeout sale.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
