Independence Day falls on Saturday this year, which means many government offices and some services will observe the holiday on Friday, July 3.

Schools and most government offces — town, county, state and federal — will be closed Friday, July 3. Customers should check their local branch before heading out.

The New York Stock Exchange will be closed. Some banks will be closed, while others my have abbreviated hours and others may be open and operating for normal hours.

Post offices will be open Friday, July 3, and regular mail delivery will take place, according to the U.S. Postal Service. But post offices will be closed Saturday, July 4, with no regular mail delivery or retail service. Mail delivery and retail service resume Monday, July 6.

Most major retail stores, supermarkets and restaurants are expected to be open Friday and Saturday, though some may have holiday hours. Shoppers should check individual store hours before going out.

The Long Island Rail Road will run on a regular summer Friday schedule with regular fares on Friday, July 3. On Saturday, July 4, the LIRR will run on a regular weekend schedule, according to the MTA.

Suffolk County Transit says its buses operates seven days a week, 365 days a year. Its route page notes that all routes operate with 60-minute service during the weekend. Riders should check the Suffolk County Transit website or Transit app for route-specific schedules and alerts.

Suffolk County Transit buses serving downtown Riverhead will be detoured Saturday, July 4, because of the Riverhead Fourth of July parade. Routes 58, 62, 66, 80 and 92 will detour in downtown Riverhead from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the Riverhead LIRR transfer hub will be temporarily relocated to the Riverhead County Center bus stop.
