If the roads around town look a bit cleaner, here’s why: Riverhead Town held its rain-delayed spring cleanup today.

Volunteers filled up about 10 very large plastic bags with litter picked up along Main Street Pulaski Street, Oliver Street, Lincoln Street and Shade Tree Lane, said Councilman James Wooten, who organizes the cleanup event each year. Councilman Tim Hubbard pitched in with today as well.

The effort got a big boost from a local church that showed up with a large group of volunteers, Wooten said. More than a dozen members of Iglesia Pentecostes Familia de Dios of Riverhead participated this year.

“They were very enthusiastic,” Wooten said. “It was great.”

The two councilmen were there with their children and were joined by several other volunteers, There were about 20 people in all, Wooten said.

The cleanup day had originally been scheduled for May 7.
