A propane-fueled fire consumed a tool shed at a home on Shade Tree Lane this afternoon.

“The homeowner saw smoke coming out of the building, opened the door and tried to put it out with a fire extinguisher,” said Riverhead Fire Department spokesperson William Sanok.

“The thing that really fueled it was a couple of propane tanks inside,” Sanok said.

A second shed in close proximity was also damaged.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at about 1:45 p.m. About 50 volunteer firefighters responded to the alarm.

The Riverhead Town fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
