Update- 5:00 a.m.: Suffolk County Police have identified the man who died yesterday at Indian Island County Park as Brian Nolan, 20, of Glen Cove.  Suffolk Police called the death a drowning and said county homicide detectives and the medical examiner were investigating, though the circumstances of his death did not appear to be criminal in nature.

Original story: A 20-year-old male who was clamming in the bay off a beach at Indian Island County Park died after he suffered a medical emergency while in the water, according to Riverhead Town Police.

The victim was at the beach with his mother, sister and a friend. His family members witnessed him go under water and struggled to pulling him to shore, where they began CPR in a frantic effort to revive him, according to police.

Witnesses called 911 to report a drowning victim undergoing CPR on the beach just before 5:30 p.m. The beach inside the county campground and park is not a bathing beach; no lifeguard is on duty there.

He was in cardiac arrest when he was rushed by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center, according to radio reports. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police did not identify the victim or provide any further information. Suffolk County Police homicide detectives are investigating the death, which is not thought to be suspicious in nature, according to Riverhead Police Lt. David Lessard.
