Not all students have a long summer vacation. Instead of beaching it in July and early August, some special education students go to school to help them keep learning over the summer.
This summer special education students attended a six-week extended school year program that focused on developing and maintaining the skills they have learned throughout the school year. Students from Kindergarten through 8th grade learned all about planet Earth. Individual students’ needs in reading, writing, and math were met daily through lessons relating to the earth. Each classroom and grade level focused on a different feature of the world, learning about subjects such as sea life, endangered species, continents, states and communities.
Older students studied the states and had related projects. During their study of Maine, Mr. Paige led the students in a map study and talked about Maine’s main agricultural crops. In a follow-up project, the students made “Spicy Weiners.” According to Mr. Paige, Maine is known for red hot weiners.
The summer director, Deborah Smidt, noted, “All classes participated in the Riverhead 2016 Summer School Olympics. The set of core values that encompass the Olympics are the same ones shared by our program. We focused on friendship (understanding each other’s similarities and differences), respect (taking care of ourselves and our school) and excellence (taking part and doing our personal best). We hope that our learning here will spark interests that continue to blossom and grow.”
The Summer Intern Program, part of the district’s Transition Services five-week program, also met throughout the summer. Transition students took part in pre-vocational training and internships on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Students were able to explore and participate in jobs throughout the community in places such as Applebees, Hyatt, Old Navy and Home Depot. The District extends a special thank you gto these businesses for supporting RCSD students in this program.
