Two festivals at L.I. Sports Park in Calverton previously nixed by the Riverhead Town Board have been given the green light after all.
The board on Tuesday rescinded its previous resolutions denying special event permit applications from Starfish Junction Productions to hold the “Long Island Potato Festival“ and the “Pour the Core Hard Cider Festival” at L.I. Sports Park on Edwards Avenue — the former site of Calverton Links Golf Course — on Oct. 1 and 8, respectively.
Riverhead officials objected to the issuance of multiple special event permits at the site, directing the site operator to file a site plan application to seek authorization to use the site for special events and festivals.
Andy Calimano of Starfish Junctions met with the town board at last week’s work session and told board members he was unaware the site owner did not have proper approvals in place to use the site for events like the ones Starfish Junctions was planning.
L.I. Sports Park has filed a site plan application and the board agreed to allow the two events to go forward.
In other action Tuesday night, the board:
- granted a special permit application for “The Cage” indoor recreation facility on Osborn Avenue
- granted a special event permit authorizing Sports Car Club of America to hold a driving event at a Splish Splash parking lot on Oct. 2, 9 and 23.
- approved a special event permit authorizing the Elks Lodge to hold lawnmower races on Oct. 30 and Nov. 20.
Mangano family honored
The board also honored the Mangano family, the new owners of the Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home on East Main Street for its good deeds and acts of charity since purchasing the funeral home in Riverhead.
Among them: donating Thanksgiving dinners for the needy through local churches, bicycles to the Riverhead Police Department Juvenile Aid Bureau for its annual youth bike rodeo, sponsoring the Jim Lull Memorial Friday Night Concert Series in Grangebel Park, and assisting two senior residents in keeping their mobile home after being injured in an automobile accident. The Mangano family has also organized paper-shredding events for area residents and coordinated a grant application for the betterment and promotion of the Butterfly Effect Project and hosted a Christmas toy drive, according to a proclamation presented to the family Tuesday by the supervisor and town board.
Sal Mangano was on hand to accept the proclamation on behalf of his family. Fellow funeral directors Joseph Grattan and Joseph Grattan Jr. of DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes were also in attendance to show their support.
