The Riverhead Fire Department held an open house at its Roanoke Avenue headquarters Sunday afternoon.
Visitors were treated to displays and demonstrations of emergency equipment, a collection of historic documents and photos, and a barbecue.
After a short opening ceremony firefighters lit a kitchen stove and trash bin on fire and showed various ways of dealing with grease, plastic, and oven fires.
They gave lessons in the use of fire extinguishers to excited children and followed up with a demonstration of a roof ventilation which included cutting a smoking roof open with a chain saw and opening up holes to allow smoke to escape.
Finally, a heavy rescue team dismantled a car using the jaws of life then set it on fire. They then put in a call to their own department to demonstrate how the process of call and response works. Fire trucks raced to the scene and extinguish the blaze.
