Riverhead firefighters made a quick stop of a fire at the Bluffs Fox Hill condominium complex before dawn this morning.
The fire started in a back bedroom of a third-floor unit, where a futon was fully engulfed in flames when Riverhead Fire Chief Kevin Brooks arrived on scene within minutes of the 5:13 a.m. alarm.
The fire was beginning to run up the bedroom wall, Brooks said. The dwelling was filled with smoke.
Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire and removed the mattress to the deck to avoid water damage to the apartment below, Brooks said.
The female resident had evacuated the apartment prior to police and firefighters arrival. She was evaluated and treated at the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps. She did not require transport to the hospital.
The condominium unit at 115 Fox Hill Drive is one of approximately 16 located in one of the soundfront buildings in the Bluffs at Fox Hill complex, the fire chief said. The building in question was built in the mid-1980s according to online records.
RFD responded with five trucks and about 50 firefighters.
