It won’t be long before we’ll hear umpires cry “Play ball!” and we’ll be able to watch teams of young girls and boys race around the bases on local baseball diamonds.

Do you know how much it costs to play Little League? It can run families as much as $120 per child to register for the season.

Riverhead Little League has been around for more than 60 years, enabling kids from ages 4 to 12 to play T-ball, baseball and softball. Although the league is run by volunteers, there are still many expenses including paying umpires and purchasing uniforms and equipment. Those costs are passed on to players through registration fees.

To help defray registration costs for families the league often runs fundraisers.

On Tuesday, Jan. 17 at Riverhead Wendy’s from 5 to 7 p.m. there will be a fundraiser for the Little League. Wendy’s will donate 10 percent of the revenue earned during that time to Riverhead LL. There is no flyer needed and eat-in, take out and drive through purchases all qualify for the donation.
