Riverhead’s girls lacrosse team had its first foray into playoff competition today and came away with a nail-biter victory, defeating Huntington 10-9.
The first half saw Riverhead score first, the beginning of a see-saw scoring binge by both teams. Huntington capitalized on Riverhead’s sloppy play, scoring some goals, and stopping the Riverhead attack. Riverhead had many scoring chances in the first half, but only managed to score on a few.
The second half saw Riverhead come back to life and pound the Huntington net with a barrage of shots, managing to build a 10-7 lead with about 1:50 on the clock. Huntington mounted a last-minute attack and managed to get two goals, bringing the score to 10-9, with 50 seconds left.
Riverhead gained possession, wound down the clock, held the lead, and advanced in the playoffs with a thrilling win.
Up next for No. 7 Riverhead is a strong No. 2 Smithtown East team on Monday at 4 p.m. at the higher-seeded Smithtown East High School.
