Riverhead Coffin Races, 2017. File photo: Courtney Blasl.

Riverhead’s first Coffin Races were a smash hit, drawing a large crowd downtown for Main Street’s Halloween festivities.

The event was originally planned for tomorrow, but was moved to today after a rainy forecast for Sunday. That did not stop hundreds from lining up along the riverfront Saturday afternoon to watch the races.

Racers worked for weeks to build and decorate their own custom “coffins” to race. Each team consisted of four runners, who pushed their wheeled casket down the riverfront with a rider inside the coffin.

Check back later for race results.
