Winter Weather Advisory in effect until Thursday morning

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 4 a.m. tomorrow.

Snow is expected to continue today with total accumulations on the North Fork of three to six inches possible, according to the winter weather advisory issued this morning by the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say the North Fork will likely see accumulations of one to three inches, with rain mixing in with snow this morning — then snow and rain with a slight chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. Precipitation may be heavy at times this afternoon. Temperatures will remain steady in the mid-30s. It will be windy today with winds from the east at 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 35 mph, increasing to 50 mph this afternoon.

Plan on slippery road conditions, including during the evening commute. Tree branches could fall due to wind gusts up to 45 to 50 mph this afternoon and evening. Be prepared for reduced visibilities at times.

Snow this morning will mix with/change to rain at times across parts of Long Island and far southeastern Connecticut, especially this afternoon.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Nassau County, New York City and most of the tri-state area. Snow accumulations of five to 9 inches are forecast for Nassau and NYC, while more than a foot of snow is expected in northern New Jersey and the lower Hudson River Valley.

A coastal flood advisory is in effect this afternoon and overnight tonight along Eastern Long Island Sound and the Eastern Bays of Long Island, the weather service said. tidal departures of two to three feet above astronomical tides will cause minor to moderate coastal flooding.

Elsewhere, heavy snow is expected at times from late morning through the afternoon.
