2014 0112 quit smoking

Have you been trying to quit smoking but can’t? Try the “Learn to be tobacco free” program.

The Suffolk County Department of Health will run its free class at the Riverhead Free Library beginning May 24 and running through July 19. The class is free but there is a small fee for medications.

Classes will meet at 6 p.m. every Thursday night. The six-week class covers techniques and strategies to help smokers quit their addictive habit.

The schedule of classes is as follows:

  • 5/24 program overview
  • 5/31 tobacco additives
  • 6/7 Pam Laffin video
  • 6/14 the physical and psychological habit
  • 6/21 creating support systems
  • 6/28 relapse prevention
  • 7/19 reunion class

“Breaking an addiction to nicotine can be very difficult,” said Suffolk County Health Commissioner James Tomarken. “Studies have shown that smokers who try to quit smoking using a combination of behavioral support and medicine are three times more likely to be successful than those who try to stop smoking without support.
