Volunteers are wanted to help with a fall cleanup and planting at the Riverhead train Station Saturday morning.
Help is needed to plant new shrubs, bushes and more than 800 bulbs, Riverhead Town Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith’s office said in a press release.
The overall improvement effort got underway on July 28 when more than three dozen volunteers turned out to plant garden beds along the platform. See prior story. The MTA also assisted by power washing the station, replacing frosted glass with transparent panels, installing security cameras, and adding bike racks, the press release said.
“This continued effort is thanks to the generous contributions of the MTA, Home Depot, civic associations, and neighbors who have joined forces to improve their town,” the supervisor’s office said in the release. “With new shrubs, bushes, and, over 800 bulbs donated, the train station will be bursting with color come spring.”
Jens-Smith praised the project. “It’s inspiring to see people get together to improve their community with their neighbors,” she said. “We’re very pleased that the MTA recognized the need to make the Riverhead train station safer, more accessible and an asset to the surrounding area. It’s one more step forward as we work to revitalize our downtown district. By encouraging visitors to take the train and use the Suffolk County bus system, these improvements will help alleviate the fall traffic and make Riverhead more accessible for everyone.”
Volunteers are asked to meet at the station at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
