What happens when a veteran dies and there’s no family left to mourn his or her death? Who stands at the graveside to honor the sacrifices the vet has made?
The Missing in America Project was founded to make sure that those veterans are not forgotten. Together with the American Legion, the organization finds, identifies and inters the unclaimed cremains of veterans with the dignity and honor they deserve.
The Suffolk County American Legion will bury U.S. Army veteran Machin Martinez at Calverton National Cemetery with full military honors on Dec. 20 at 1:30 p.m. At the time of his death at age 65, he had no family to claim his remains. The Legionnaires in attendance at his burial will be his family.
Legionnaires attending should meet behind the administration building at Calverton National Cemetery prior to 1:30 p.m.
