As any parent who’s ever had a child graduate from high school knows all too well, prom season can be very expensive and a major source of family stress.

Riverhead Free Library is hoping to relieve some of that stress by offering free prom dresses, suits, shoes and accessories — and some suits for guys, too — at its “Project Prom Boutique Day” event Saturday, May 4.

The library has collected prom dresses, gowns and suits — including many brand-new items, thanks to a generous donation from North Fork Bridal Shoppe in Wading River.

A boutique will be set up at the library for young ladies and gentlemen to browse the racks and pick out free dresses, suits, shoes and accessories. The boutique will be open on Saturday from 12 noon to 3 p.m.

The library is accepting donations of gently used prom attired through May 3, so if there’s a prom dress hanging in a closet in your house, here’s a chance to pay it forward.

“This is the first time we’ve hosted something like this,” library director Kerrie McMullen-Smith said. “We’re excited.”
