Riverhead Police rescued three men in a boat who were lost in dense fog on Long Island Sound late last night.
Police said they received a 911 call at 9:45 p.m. from Shaun Moore, who said he and two others had left Iron Pier in a 10-foot aluminum fishing boat when dense fog rolled in. The boat was operable but the men had lost their bearings to Iron Pier boat ramp.
The Riverhead Police dive/rescue team, U.S. Coast Guard, N.Y. State Environmental Conservation Police and Jamesport Fire Department responded to search for the men.
Flares were set up on the beach in the hope of helping the lost boaters find the shoreline.
“Out on the sound stuck on the water,” one of the men, James Hardy, posted on Facebook at 10:47 p.m.
Riverhead Police located the boat approximately one mile off the shore north of Aldrich Lane in Laurel, according to a police press release. The boat was towed back to Iron pier along with the three occupants.
Shaun Moore, Martineil Price and James Hardy, all of Riverhead, reported no injuries and refused medical attention, police said.
The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory for Suffolk County and the Long Island Sound just before 10:30 last night. The advisory remained in effect until 6 a.m. this morning.
