(Updated 6:24 p.m.) Power was restored along Route 58 in Riverhead after an outage that had traffic signals down and stores without power from Mill Road to Northville Turnpike along the commercial corridor.

A PSEG-Long Island spokesperson said this evening today’s outage was caused by a heat-related equipment failure in the vicinity of Route 58 and Mill Road. Two-hundred, fifty-one customers along the Route 58 corridor were without power for 64 minutes, PSEG-Long Island spokesperson Elizabeth Flagler said. The utility shut off power to additional customers for brief intervals, up to 12 minutes for some, in order to safely make necessary repairs, Flagler said.

A spokesperson for PSEG-Long Island said the utility company is working to determine the cause of the outage, which occurred shortly before 4 p.m. Riverhead Police said they had no information about the cause of the outage.

Riverhead firefighters are responding to automatic alarms at multiple businesses. Rooftop HVAC units in at least two locations were emitting smoke or steam, according to radio reports. The Big Lots store was evacuated.

The PSEG-LI website shows 267 customers without power along Route 58. The utility’s outage map shows scattered outages across Suffolk County affecting 2,570 suctomers as of 4:55 p.m. Estimated restoration time is 6 p.m., according to the website.

Police are in the intersections in the affected area directing traffic. Motorists are advised to use extra caution.
