Heavy rain is expected today as a coastal storm approaches the Long Island. The strong low pressure system is expected to produce rainfall totals of 2 to 5 inches, with locally higher amounts are possible, the National Weather Service said in a statement. Rainfall rates may exceed one inch per hour at times. The heaviest rainfall is expected to occur this morning through early afternoon.

Heavy rain may produce areas of flash flooding. A flash flood watch remains in effect through 6 p.m.

A coastal flood advisory is also in effect for northeast Suffolk from noon until 8 p.m. today.

Minor flooding is expected in the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline today.

Locally moderate flooding may occur along the westernmost shores of Peconic Bay, where road closures may be likely, vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront could become flooded, and where flooding could also extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers, the weather service said.

The low pressure system will pass near the “benchmark” off the Long Island Coast, setting up a classic nor’easter. North winds, becoming northeasterly this evening, of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are forecast. The strongest winds are expected to impact the area during the early morning hours Wednesday, according to National Weather Service forecasters.

A wind advisory is in effect from 6 o’clock this evening until tomorrow.

A gale warning is in effect for the waters of the Long Island Sound and a storm warning is in effect for the Atlantic Ocean off the shore of eastern Suffolk.

Heaviest rains are expected in western portions of Long Island and in NYC, while the strongest wins are expected on the East End.
