As Hurricane Erin passes Long Island well offshore, its impacts will be felt locally with widespread coastal flooding across the East End, especially along the Peconic River and near Orient Point and life-threatening rip currents and high surf along the south shore.

Widespread minor flooding is expected in the most vulnerable locations near the waterfront, especially during the Sunday morning high tide cycle, when up to 1 ½  feet of inundation above ground level is possible, the National Weather Service said in the advisory.

A new coastal flood advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for the area along the Peconic River in Riverhead tonight.

High tide this evening in Riverhead is forecast to be about 2.5 feet above normal, causing flooding of one to two feet above ground level along the shore of the Peconic River in Riverhead, the National Weather Service said in a coastal flood advisory.

A coastal flood advisory has been issued for Friday night into Sunday morning for the north shore of Suffolk and Nassau County as Hurricane Lee passes about 250-300 miles east of Montauk, the National Weather Service said this afternoon.

Potentially heavy rain and strong winds are expected tonight into tomorrow morning as a coastal storm bears down on the local region.

The strong low pressure system is expected to produce rainfall totals of 2 to 5 inches, with locally higher amounts are possible, the National Weather Service said in a statement. A coastal flood advisory is in effect through 8 p.m. and a wind advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. through noon tomorrow.
