Riverhead has had accumulations of 16 to 20 inches across town as of 2 p.m., Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said this afternoon.

At 2:51 p.m., radar showed one last heavy snow band extending across Long Island Sound to near Montauk, and was slowly weakening, the National Weather Service said in a statement. This band is still capable of producing snowfall of up to 2 inches per hour, according to the statement.

Elsewhere, the combination of moderate snow and blowing and drifting snow was reducing visibility to below one-quarter mile at times, especially in exposed areas, the weather service said. These conditions, combined with northwest winds gusting between 40 and 50 mph, are still producing blizzard conditions in many places, the weather service said.

Plow trucks are contending with blowing and drifting snow, especially on roads along the town’s open farm fields. So far, they have been able to keep town roads open and passable despite these conditions.

A blizzard warning remains in effect until 7 p.m.
