Riverhead Police detectives are investigating an alleged threat of violence made by a Riverhead Middle School student yesterday morning, the police department said in a press release late last night.

Police were called to the middle school at 10:11 a.m. Monday for a report that a student there threatened to conduct an act of violence against the faculty and students, according to the press release.

The investigation is ongoing and the parents of the student are cooperating with the police at this time, police said. Police ask anyone with additional information to call the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500, ext. 312 or the Crime Hotline at 631-727-3333. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.

This is the third time in two weeks Riverhead Police were called to Riverhead schools regarding alleged threats made by students.

Last week in separate incidents, two 15-year-old male high school students were arrested and charged with making terroristic threats after allegedly making threats of violence. One student said he would “shoot up the school” while in the high school building, according to police. The other student allegedly posted a threat on Instagram. Police searched the homes of both students and found no weapons, police said. “The Riverhead School District takes a threat of any kind very seriously. There is zero tolerance for such behavior or actions,” Superintendent Augustine Tornatore said in a letter to the school community yesterday afternoon.

“A police presence at our Riverhead Middle School will remain for the rest of the week to reassure our school community,” the superintendent said. “In these challenging times, we would like to remind our school community to report any suspicious behavior, verbal or written, to a school administrator.”
