Are you registered to vote?
Yes — you.
If you’re not sure, check now.
Participating in how our country, state, county and town are governed has never been more important than it is today. Right now. And the responsibility is yours.
There’s a lot riding on the outcome of the 2022 elections — in Washington and in New York State. Unfortunately, participation by eligible voters is lowest in “off-year” elections — i.e. non-presidential election years. And voter turnout is absolutely abysmal in the most local elections.
If you’re not registered, you have an important deadline coming up in the week ahead. Oct. 14 is the deadline to register to vote in New York in order to participate in the Nov. 8 general election.
You can register in person at the Suffolk County Board of Elections, on Yaphank Avenue in Yaphank, or or at any New York State agency-based voter registration center.
You may also submit your voter application form at the Department of Motor Vehicles, either in person or on the DMV website if you already have DMV-issued identification.
You can request a voter registration form by entering your name directly into the N.Y. State Board of Elections mailing list database.
You can call the state hotline at 1-800-FOR-VOTE (1-800-367-8683) to request a voter application.
You can download a voter registration form here.
Voter registration forms may be sent to the county board of elections by U.S. Mail. They must be postmarked by Oct. 14.
Whatever excuse you’ve had in the past for not voting isn’t good enough in these times. Without participation by eligible voters, we won’t have representative government any more. It’s that simple.
As it stands in 2022, representative democracy teetering on the brink in the United States of America.
If all who are eligible stand up for the franchise, register to vote and cast their ballots, we can make sure our government at all levels represents the public it’s supposed to serve.
If we keep failing at this, we will let democracy slip through our fingers and “government of the people, by the people and for the people” will indeed perish.
We can’t let that happen. You can’t let that happen. Get informed about the issues and candidates. Vote.
