Family and friends of former Riverhead resident James “Jimi” Patterson are planning a candlelight service in his memory on Monday, Nov. 7 at 5:45 p.m. on the Riverhead High School football field. Family and friends will meet on the field beginning at 5 p.m.
Patterson died Oct. 20 in Tulsa, Oklahoma following a brutal, unprovoked axe attack inside an apartment there on Oct. 17.
The victim’s sister is organizing the candlelight service at high school for the former Riverhead resident, Patterson’s father, Robert Patterson, said.
The family is also planning a celebration of life for Patterson to be held soon, Robert Patterson said.
Tusla Police said Patterson was seated inside the apartment in downtown Tulsa, eating a meal, when a man who had come to the apartment to purchase an axe from another person, without provocation, swung the axe at Patterson and struck him in the head. The assailant fled the premises, but was shortly thereafter apprehended by police.
Israel Trejo, 26, initially arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, is now facing one count of first-degree murder. He was arraigned on Oct. 24 and is being held without bail in the Tulsa County jail and is due in Tulsa County Criminal Court for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 12.
