Did you know that some 50 billion pieces of litter mar the landscape along roadways and waterways in the United States? That’s more than 2,000 pieces of litter per mile — and 152 items for each U.S. resident.
These stats come from a 2020 litter study done by Keep America Beautiful, an organization that’s been researching the subject since 1969.
Litter is an ongoing problem in Riverhead and to help address it, the town established a litter committee that, among other things, organizes two town-wide cleanups every year.
The next town-wide cleanup will take place on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22. Volunteers are needed and community service credits are available for those who participate.
Volunteers can pick up supplies and register for a location to clean up on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22 beginning at 9 a.m at Riverhead Town Hall, 200 Howell Avenue, Riverhead.
It’s a fun and rewarding way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday morning, Riverhead Litter Committee chairperson Deborah Wetzel says.
