An air quality health advisory is in effect all day again today for fine particulates resulting from the wildfires in eastern Canada.
The advisory is in effect for Long Island and the New York City metro region, as well as across much of upstate, state environmental and health officials said in a press release.
The air quality today will be unhealthy for people with heart or breathing problems, such as asthma, as well as children and the elderly. Exposure to fine particulates can cause short-term health effects for everyone, including irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and shortness of breath.
The National Weather Service forecasts patchy smoke this morning and areas of smoke this afternoon in otherwise clear, sunny skies for the Long Island region .
Fine particulate matter consists of tiny solid particles or liquid droplets in the air that are 2.5 microns or less in diameter, according to the State DEC. PM 2.5 can be made of many different types of particles and often come from processes that involve combustion (e.g. vehicle exhaust, power plants, and fires) and from chemical reactions in the atmosphere.
