Riverhead firefighters tamped down a small brush fire in the area of the LIPA substation off West Main Street this morning.
Firefighters responded to the scene with a brush truck at about 11:45 a.m. They found two separate fires burning in the utility right-of-way adjacent to the substation structure.
Though accessible from West Main Street and within the Riverhead Fire District, the substation is located south of the Peconic River and within the Town of Southampton.
The Southampton Town fire marshal’s office responded to investigate. Chief Fire Marshal John Rankin was not available for comment today and no one else in the office is authorized to speak to the media, according to a woman who answered the phone there this afternoon.
Riverhead firefighters contained and extinguished the fires, which did not pose an imminent threat to the utility infrastructure.
No further information about the incident was immediately available.
