Heavy rain overnight and early this morning have caused multiple areas of standing water and some significant flooding on local roadways, Riverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said.

Motorists should use extra caution if they must travel this morning, Zaleski said. There is a lot of ponding on Sound Avenue, he said. The intersection of Sound and Osborn Avenues is flooded again, as it was Wednesday morning after overnight rains from the storm earlier this week.

Hubbard Avenue also has a lot of flooding, Zaleski said.

Route 58 at the entrance to the Gala Fresh (old Walmart) shopping center is flooded, due to a broken fire hydrant damaged in a motor vehicle accident, the highway superintendent said. “Rt. 58 is down to one lane in that area,” Zaleski said. Riverhead Police have contacted the Suffolk County Department of Public Works to advise them of the broken hydrant.

Riverhead Highway Department crews are out pumping water off town roads this morning, Zaleski said.

“We’ve had over 10 inches of rain in less than two weeks,” the highway superintendent said.
