Riverhead Town Police reported 155 criminal incidents and 81 arrests in December, according to a monthly crime report released by Police Chief David Hegermiller this month.

The arrests made in December, according to the police chief’s report were for:

  • Aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle (2)
  • Assault (4)
  • Burglary (1)
  • Criminal contempt (5)
  • Criminal mischief (10)
  • Criminal possession of a controlled substance (1)
  • Driving while intoxicated (14)
  • Endangering the welfare of a child (1)
  • Fugitive from justice (1)
  • Grand larceny (1)
  • Harassment (1)
  • Menacing (1)
  • Obstructing government administration (1)
  • Petit larceny (15)
  • Rape (1)
  • Robbery (1)
  • Town code violation (7)
  • Trespass (3)
  • Warrant (18)

For reference, police reported 246 criminal incidents and 93 arrests in December 2022. 

The Riverhead Police Department has changed its method of reporting arrests to comply with the Uniform Crime Reporting system. The new method counts every single crime charged during an arrest, rather than just the most serious charge, as was the department’s previous practice.

Due to the change, Hegermiller’s monthly report now provides both “arrests by number” and “arrests by subject.”

There were 79 individuals arrested in December — 78 adults and one juvenile.

Out of the 79 individuals arrested, 46 were held for arraignment.

Police reported 65 domestic incidents in December.

The town issued 780 summonses in December: 41 town code violations, 621 traffic tickets and 118 parking tickets.

There were 2,619 non-criminal incidents reported by police in December.

Police reported 172 motor vehicle accidents in December, none fatal; 21 were classified as minor . Eighteen accidents involved deer.
