Southampton Town Police report the arrest of a Riverhead man late last night who was operating a vehicle reported stolen out of New York City.
Police said a patrol officer conducted a traffic stop on a 2017 Dodge Charger observed speeding on County Road 51 near Old Riverhead-Moriches Road on March 27 at 10:33 p.m.
Further investigation by officers on scene found that the vehicle had previously been reported stolen out of New York City, according to a police press release issued early this morning.
The operator of the vehicle, Justus N. Davender, age 28, of Riverhead was arrested at the scene and charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen
Property in the Third Degree, a felony, and several violations of the Vehicle and Traffic Law, police said.
Davender was transported to Southampton Town Police Headquarters and held for morning arraignment, police said.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
