Mark Emerson of Southold died on May 2, 2024. He was 95 years old.

Born on Feb. 7, 1929, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Emerson was the son of Alfred and Mary Trudelle Emerson. He served in the Army and was part of the occupation of Korea from 1946 to 1948. After his military service, he attended the University of Wisconsin where he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in geology. He also earned an MBA at Washington University in St. Louis.
Emerson began his career as an exploration geologist with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. He then moved on to mineral exploration in the Midwest, followed by many years with Newmont Mining as a mineral economist, after several years at the Battelle Memorial Institute. He was a long-standing member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) and in 2019, he received the Distinguished Member Award for his pioneering work in the field of mineral economics.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Emerson was a gifted restorer of two separate New York brownstones. He had a love for the outdoors, especially birding, and enjoyed attending and listening to musical performances ranging from Broadway plays to the opera.
Predeceased by his brothers, John, Paul and Hugh, and his first wife, Elinor Mason Emerson, he is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Timmons Emerson.
