Fifty-eight children competed in the Riverhead Police Athletic League’s annual Bike Rodeo Saturday morning at Stotzky Park.
Kids in kindergarten through 6th grade demonstrated their skills on a course designed to test their abilities to control their bicycles and promote rider safety. Riverhead Police officers graded their performance on the course and chatted with the children about the importance of the skills being tested.
Boys and girls with the top scores in three grade groups won brand new bicycles, donated by Riverhead Police PBA, Riverhead Police Superior Officers Association, and local businesses Riverhead Building Supply, Alexander Rothwell Funeral Home and RiverheadLOCAL.
Gift certificates donated by the Riverhead PBA and several local businesses were awarded to second, third, fourth and fifth place finishers and other achievement awards — enthusiastic rider, excellent effort, and “high-five award” — in each grade group. Gift certificate donors included Bean & Bagel Cafe, Cucina 25, Dari-Land Ice Cream, I-Hop, Moe’s, Splish-Splash, Star Confectionery and TGI Fridays.
