The Riverhead Faculty and Community Theatre is seeking actors for its summer production of “The Foreigner” by Larry Shue.
This comedy is directed by Alek Lewis and will have six performances: Aug. 9, 10 and 11 at the Jamesport Meeting House in Jamesport and Aug. 16, 17 and 18 at the North Shore United Methodist Church in Wading River. The production will rehearse weeknights and some weekend nights primarily in Wading River.
Auditions will be held on Thursday, May 30 at 6-8 p.m. and Monday, June 3 at 6-8 p.m. at the North Shore United Methodist Church, 260 Rte. 25A, Wading River, NY 11792.
Actors should prepare a contemporary comedic monologue and be prepared to read from the show’s script.
The story takes place in a fishing lodge in rural Tilghman County, Georgia where two Englishmen, Froggy and Charlie, arrive as guests. The shy Charlie agreed to accompany Froggy on the trip after his sick wife begged him to go. When people at the lodge try to talk to Charlie, however, he remains silent: he is terribly shy, depressed about his wife’s illness, and cannot find the words to reply. Froggy claims that Charlie cannot talk because he is a “foreigner” from an exotic country, and does not understand English. Taking the explanation that he’s a non-English speaker as fact, the lodge’s guests quickly begin revealing their secrets, and Charlie soon discovers scandals amongst some of the residents of the lodge.
PLEASE NOTE: The age range reflects the age of the character. Actors that are younger or older will be considered for a role even if they are not themselves within the age range.
Charlie Baker (25-40): a meek proofreader for a science fiction magazine who starts off depressed. Throughout the show he speaks primarily in a language he makes up. He is extremely shy, but living at the lodge and being in contact with such wonderful people, he soon comes out of his shell and eventually finds himself the center of attention and a hero.
S/Sgt. “Froggy” LeSueur (25-45): a cheerful British Army man who teaches the use of explosives. Good natured and cares greatly for Charlie.
Betty Meeks (age range 50+) owns a resort lodge and mothers her guests. A tough woman with a fun, sarcastic nature.
Rev. David Marshall Lee (age range 20-35): a charming, young pastor engaged to Catherine and one of the villains of the play. He puts on the appearance of a good natured man but has a darker and hateful side that is revealed throughout the play through the eyes of other characters.
Catherine Simms (age range 20-35): a pretty heiress going through an emotional time. She is kind and caring towards her brother Ellard and quickly shows Charlie the same attention.
Ellard Simms (age range 12-16): Catherine’s “dim-witted” brother, heir to half the family money if Catherine decides he is “smart enough to handle it.” He is a kind, gentle-hearted man treated harshly by some. Charlie helps Ellard become in tune with how bright he is and in turn is taught by Ellard what it means to be patient and lighthearted.
Owen Musse (age range 50+): an arrogant building inspector who is revealed as a dangerous, racist man. One of the villains of the play.
Please contact Alek Lewis at 631-574-7772 or by email at aleklewis99@gmail.com if you have any questions about the production. Actors who would like to audition but cannot make the scheduled audition times can get in touch with Alek to make arrangements to audition and be considered.
