On Monday, June 10, the Riverhead Police Department Community Orientated Police Enforcement (COPE) Division, with cooperation from Riverhead CAP, conducted a State Liquor Authority compliance check at 15 retail vendors throughout Riverhead Town, resulting in three arrests, police said in a press release Monday night.

The compliance check targeted the sale of alcohol products to patrons under the age of 21.

Suat Akkaya, 33, of Wading River, an employee of Village Beverage, Nicholas Alaia, 21, of Calverton, an employee of Riverhead Liquor Mart and Jenny Flores Vasquez, 34, of Riverhead, an employee of ShopRite, were arrested and each charged with one count of Penal Law 260.20(2) Unlawful Dealing with a Child 1st Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor, according to the report.

All three subjects were processed and released on a desk appearance ticket with a future court date, police said.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
