The Riverhead Police Department is warning the public against calling a phone number advertised on signed that appeared around town this weekend promoting an auction starting at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The signs advertise “government forfeited” items, including a luxury automobile, fine art and precious gems to sold at a public auction at an undisclosed location.
Police did not provide further information. Officers are picking up the signs from area roadways, which were placed illegally according to the press release. Police ask members of the public to report any remaining signs to police at 631-727-4500.
A phone call to the advertised phone number went to a voice mailbox for “the auction department.”
The signs did not provide an auction location, just a phone number with a 934 (Suffolk County) area code. The phone number on the signs also appears on a website for Dominion Auctions, dominionauctions.net, a domain name that was created in March 2023, according to domain name records publicly available online. The domain records do not disclose the name or location of the owner of the domain name.
Dominion Auctions is not listed in the New York State Department of State online registry of businesses authorized to do business in the state. Dominion Auctions does not have a business certificate in Suffolk County, according to the Suffolk County Clerk’s online records.
A representative of Dominion Auctions could not immediately be reached for comment.
