(Updated 5 p.m.) A red flag warning is in effect Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. due to critical fire weather conditions expected.

A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry fuels will create a significantly elevated fire growth potential. Northwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph and relative humidity as low as 25%, are expected.

The National Weather Service in a statement early Friday said there would be an increased risk of fire spread Friday and a fire weather watch in effect Saturday for Long Island, New York City and Lower Hudson Valley regions.

New York State has declared a burn ban through Nov. 30.

Use extra caution if handling any potential ignition sources, such as machinery or matches, and ensure to properly extinguish or dispose cigarette butts, the weather service said.
