A high wind warning is in effect from noon to 10 p.m. Wednesday.
South winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected, the National Weather Service said Tuesday.
The warning is in effect in eastern Suffolk County, as well as in southern New London County in Connecticut.
“Damaging winds will blow down numerous tree limbs, and scattered trees and power lines. Power outages are likely,” the weather service said. “Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.”
A coastal flood statement was also issued for eastern Suffolk Wednesday, from 4 a.m. through Wednesday evening.
Up to a half foot of inundation above ground level is possible in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline during the Wednesday morning and afternoon high tides, the weather service said.
Breaking waves of 10 to 16 feet along the ocean beaches of Suffolk County, with 4 to 8 feet at Orient Point, are expected during the times of evening high tide Wednesday, according to the weather service forecast. This will result in beach flooding and erosion with scattered dune erosion, the weather service said. Localized overwashes are possible where dune structures have been compromised.
