Suffolk County Legislator Catherine Stark honored Alexander Escobar as the First Legislative District’s Champion of Diversity for the year 2025.
Aléxander Escobar was born in Guatemala City and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 12. He attended Hampton Bays High School, graduating in 1998, then went on to study digital arts and cinematography at Briarcliff College. At the age of 20, Escobar launched his first business—a labor services company in the Hamptons that helped bridge the language gap between Spanish-speaking laborers and English-speaking contractors.
Escobar is the owner of Cafe Victoria in Riverhead and a board member of the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce. He is the founder and chairman of the Hispanic Development, Empowerment, and Education Committee in the Town of Riverhead. The committee was officially established by the Town Board as a Riverhead Town advisory committee in February.
“Given his work in the Hispanic community, along with his dedication to the Town of Riverhead, Alexander was an easy choice for this year’s Champion of Diversity,” Stark said. “I was proud to have Alexander here and to have such an outstanding pillar of the community from the East End.”
The Riverhead Hispanic Development, Empowerment, and Education Committee meetings will take place on the first Tuesday of the month in Riverhead Town Hall starting at 5 p.m.
“I look forward to working with the HDEEC going forward, and how the county can help the HDEEC and our Hispanic community here in Riverhead and the entire First Legislative District, of which I am proud to represent and be an advocate for in the Legislature,” Stark said.
The Suffolk County Legislature in 2022 designated April as “Champions of Diversity Month” in Suffolk to recognize individuals who exhibit excellence in demonstrating the appreciation of diversity, inclusion and cultural competence in the local communities.
This year’s champion of diversity awards were presented during the County Legislature’s April 8 general meeting in Riverhead.
