Olga’s, a new restaurant serving Guatemalan and American classics, opened its doors in downtown Riverhead Tuesday.
The restaurant is the second business venture of a local Guatemalan immigrant family. In 2015, the family opened Olga’s Deli on Montauk Highway in East Quogue, and after nearly 10 years, they felt it was time to expand.
“It was my mom’s idea,” Olga Vargas, the restaurant’s manager, said of the restaurant. “Ever since I can remember, she would always say ‘One day, I will own my own café to have a place for people to gather with their families and eat food.”
Vargas, 32, manages the front of the restaurant while her mother, Olga Chucuy, oversees the kitchen. The menu features traditional Guatemalan and Spanish dishes such as tacos and mixtas — a street food consisting of a condiment-loaded hot dog wrapped in a tortilla — as well as classic American fare like sandwiches, cheeseburgers and breakfast items. Breakfast is served all day.
The large Guatemalan immigrant population in the Riverhead area inspired the family to open the restaurant here. Vargas said her family immigrated from Guatemala when she was 9 years old and lived in Westhampton Beach before moving to Riverhead five years ago. The family celebrated the restaurant’s grand opening on Tuesday with friends visiting from Guatemala.
“I think it’s like a treasure, the little corner here,” Vargas said. “We love it, and people are so excited that we’re here. We’re very happy to be here.”
Olga’s is located at 40b East Main Street, in the same building as the sushi restaurant Haiku, between Barth’s Drug Store and Green Earth Grocery. The location previously hosted Taco Bout It, a Mexican restaurant. Olga’s is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
