A pile of sand and toy trucks proved to be a popular attraction at the Riverhead Highway Department's truck show for kids June 21. RiverheadLOCAL/ Emil Breitenbach Jr.

The Riverhead Highway Department on Saturday held its second annual truck show for kids, a free event that allows children to look at the highway department’s trucks and equipment.

Riverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski, who initiated the event last year, said more than 200 people attended.

Zaleski said he placed a pile of sand in one portion of the highway yard and “gathered up a bunch of Tonka trucks for them to play with.” That was actually the biggest attraction, he said.

“It was really nice. The kids played together and had a lot of fun,” Zaleski said. The children were also allowed the chance to check out the department’s vehicles and equipment.

Lolly’s Hut donated 250 hot dogs and buns and Snowflake Ice Cream donated 300 cups of ice cream, Zaleski said, and Council Member Ken Rothwell donated a portable lavatory. Five or six highway department employees volunteered to help run the event.  Zaleski expressed his appreciation for the donations and for the volunteers who helped make the day a success.
