Riverhead Police rescued two people from the Long Island Sound Saturday after they fell off a jet ski about ¾ of a mile northeast of Iron Pier Beach, police said in a press release Saturday night.

Police received a 911 call at 3:47 p.m. Saturday reporting that two people had fallen off a jet ski off Iron Pier Beach and were in distress.

The Riverhead Police Department’s dive/rescue team responded and launched its rescue boat, police said. Jamesport Fire Department and Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the call.

Police located the two people in the water approximately ¼ mile from their jet ski, according to the press release. They were rescued from the water and taken back to Iron Pier Beach where they were treated by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for minor injuries, police said.

The jet ski was recovered a short time later and turned over to a family member, according to the report.
