Riverhead Chief of Police Ed Frost said he compared year-over-year data for the three-month period of June, July and August and found a decrease of 249 criminal incidents reported to police, a 28% decline.

“It’s nice when you beef up the police department and see results like that,” Frost told the Town Board at Thursday’s work session, when he presented the monthly report.

“Yes, that’s exactly what it was intended to do and it’s working,” Supervisor Tim Hubbard said.

Adequate staffing in the department has helped with specialized units like the crime control unit, Frost said. That unit allows for more consistent follow-up and more arrests, he said.

Criminal incidents fell from August to September as well, Frost noted.

Riverhead Police arrested 74 adults (58 males, 16 females) and one juveniles (male) on the above-listed charges, according to the report.

Out of the individuals arrested, 40 were held for arraignment.

Riverhead Police reported 66 domestic incidents in September.

The town issued 749 summonses in September: 38 for town code violations, 527 traffic tickets and 180 parking tickets.

There were 2,583 non-criminal incidents reported by Riverhead Police in September. There were no overdoses, according to the report.

Police reported 160 motor vehicle accidents in Riverhead Town in September, including two fatalities; 18 accidents were classified as minor. Eleven accidents involved a deer.
