Brent Henry, 61, of Riverhead, convicted last month of second-degree murder and weapons charges in the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old man in East Patchogue in August 2023, was sentenced last week to 25 years to life in prison.

Henry shot and killed Ines Reyes, his niece’s boyfriend, on Aug. 18, 2023 following a physical fight inside the Bellport home Reyes shared with Henry’s niece, who was eight months pregnant, according to to prosecutors. The couple left their home and went to a family member’s home in East Patchogue. Henry showed up there and got into another altercation with Reyes, then retrieved a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun from his vehicle and shot Reyes multiple times in front of his girlfriend, prosecutors said.

Reyes succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at Long Island Community Hospital.

“Mr. Reyes was one month away from becoming a father when the defendant made the senseless decision to murder him,” Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said in a press release last month announcing Henry’s conviction.

Henry was sentenced Nov. 7 by Acting Supreme Court Justice Richard Horowitz to 25 years to life in prison, plus 5 years post-release supervision, Tierney said.
